Brandywine Pink – a smooth, juicy tomato with mild acidity
What makes Brandywine Pink special
Brandywine Pink is a classic beefsteak tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) with pink skin, soft texture and a round, sweet flavour. One of the best-loved American heirloom varieties – perfect for anyone who wants to grow tomatoes at home with genuine flavour.
Background and name
The Brandywine series was introduced in the late 1800s in the USA and has since become legendary among tomato growers. The pink version is the best known.
Appearance and growth habit
A tall-growing (indeterminate) variety with vigorous growth. The plant needs tying up and side shoots removed regularly. The tomatoes grow large and slightly flat-round, about 300–500 grams.
Flavour and uses of Brandywine Pink
The flavour is sweet, smooth and slightly creamy with low acidity. Sliced Brandywine on a piece of bread with a little olive oil is pure pleasure. Also good in salad or a tomato sandwich.
Ripening time, resistance and storage
Mid-season – about 75 days to harvest. Does best in a greenhouse or a very warm outdoor spot. The texture is soft – best eaten the same day you harvest.
Pollination tips
Shake the flower trusses lightly to increase the number of fruits when growing in a greenhouse.
How to grow Brandywine Pink
Sow indoors March–April. Pot on into a larger pot. Plant out in a greenhouse or a warm, sheltered spot. Remove side shoots and give support. Ripens after about 75 days.
The price is for 10 tomato seeds
Sow in seed compost and keep the compost lightly moist until the seeds germinate. Pot on into larger pots with nutrient-rich compost when the plants have their first true leaves. Harden off before planting out. Does best in a greenhouse or a warm spot outdoors. Give support, remove side shoots regularly and water evenly for the best results.
