Brandywine Yellow – a mild, sweet beefsteak tomato in a beautiful yellow
What is Brandywine Yellow?
Brandywine Yellow is an elegant beefsteak tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) with a warm yellow tone and a creamy, mild flavour. A lovely variety to grow tomatoes from seed if you appreciate lower acidity and large fruit.
Background and name
A colour variant of the classic Brandywine tomato, which has been grown in the USA for over a century. The yellow version is popular with those who look for milder tomato flavours.
Appearance and growth habit
Brandywine Yellow is a tall-growing (indeterminate) variety with a large habit. Its side shoots need pinching out and it must be tied in. The fruits are large and flattened-round, often over 400 grams.
Flavour and uses
The flavour is mild and creamy with a light sweet note – ideal for slicing, grilling or a colourful tomato platter. Also popular with children thanks to its soft profile.
Ripening time, resilience and storage
Ripens after about 75–80 days. Best suited to a greenhouse. The tomatoes have thinner skins and should be eaten within a few days of harvest.
Pollination tips
Shake the plants gently during flowering to ensure pollination.
How to grow Brandywine Yellow
Sow indoors in March–April. Keep the seedlings warm and plant out once the risk of frost has passed. Pinch out side shoots and tie in. Ripens after about 75–80 days.
Price is for 10 tomato seeds
Sow in seed compost and keep it lightly moist until the seeds germinate. Pot on into larger pots of nutrient-rich compost once the seedlings have their first true leaves. Harden off before planting out. Does best in a greenhouse or a warm spot outdoors. Give support, pinch out side shoots regularly and water evenly for the best results.
