7 Pot Brainstrain Red – brutal heat in a classic red package
What makes 7 Pot Brainstrain Red special?
7 Pot Brainstrain Red is an extremely hot chilli that belongs in the top league of super-hot varieties. With its rough, almost bubbly surface it looks as dangerous as it actually is – which fits, as the strength is often far above a million Scoville. This is no chilli for the cautious, but if you want to grow something seriously hot, it is an obvious choice.
Background and name
The name ‘7 Pot’ comes from Trinidad, where they say a single pod is enough to season seven different pots of stew – a good hint of the strength to expect. ‘Brainstrain’ refers to the characteristic surface of the pods, which looks a bit like a brain, and ‘Red’ marks this as the classic, fiery-red version of the variety. The combination of origin, shape and colour makes it a favourite with collectors and growers of super-hot chillies.
Appearance and growth habit
The plants grow sturdy and can reach around 1.2–1.5 metres tall, depending on growing conditions. They are very productive and give masses of pods with the classic ‘brainy’ look – bumpy, irregular and often with a small point. The pods ripen from green to intense red, which makes the plant truly eye-catching through the season.
Flavour and uses
7 Pot Brainstrain Red has not only explosive heat but also a deep, slightly earthy flavour with subtle fruity notes in the background. It is excellent for making really strong sauces, chilli powder or for giving extra punch to a stew. This is a chilli you use in small amounts – but one that still leaves a big impression.
The red Brainstrain variant is out of stock at the moment, but 7 Pot Brain Strain Yellow is in stock and gives the same extreme Brainstrain character in yellow form.

Sow in moist seed compost or peat pellets and keep warm, at about 25–30°C for best germination. The compost should be moist but not wet. A propagator helps to keep the air humid. Once the seedlings have grown a little and developed their second pair of leaves, you can lower the temperature to about 20°C and take them out of the propagator. They do well on a sunny windowsill, in a greenhouse and outdoors in summer. For best results, soak the seeds in Growhelper for 12–24 hours before sowing
