Black Cherry – cherry tomato with a dark tone and intense flavour
What makes Black Cherry special
Black Cherry is a flavourful cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) with a deep wine-red colour and a rich, sweet flavour. It is one of the best-loved cherry varieties among tomato enthusiasts and a must if you want to grow tomatoes at home with character.
Background and name
The variety was developed in the USA and has become very popular in Europe thanks to its beautiful colour and powerful flavour. A good choice for both greenhouse and outdoors.
Appearance and growth habit
Black Cherry is a tall-growing (indeterminate) tomato that needs pinching out. It produces long trusses of small, round tomatoes that ripen to a dark brownish-purple shade.
Flavour and uses
The flavour is sweet, deep and full, with a hint of smokiness. Perfect in salads, as a snack or on a cheeseboard. A flavour bomb in miniature.
Ripening time, resilience and storage
Ripens early, in about 65–70 days. Has good resistance to splitting and also does well in cooler weather. Keeps for a couple of days at room temperature but is best fresh.
Pollination tips
Gently shake the flower trusses to encourage pollination in greenhouse growing.
Growing Black Cherry tomato seeds
Sow indoors in March–April. Pot on into larger pots of nutrient-rich compost. Plant out when night temperatures are stable. Give support and pinch out regularly. Does well in both a greenhouse and a warm outdoor spot. Ripens after about 65–70 days.

Sow in seed compost and keep the compost lightly moist until the seeds germinate. Pot on into larger pots of nutrient-rich compost once the seedlings have their first true leaves. Harden off before planting out. Does best in a greenhouse or a warm spot outdoors. Give support, pinch out regularly and water evenly for the best results.
