Chantenay Red Core 5 is an autumn/winter carrot with blunt, conical roots about 15 cm long. Good to eat straight away, but it can also be stored over winter. Does best in stone-free, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Water in dry weather. Thin and weed while the plants are small, otherwise they are easily smothered. Seeds for about 5 metres of row
Growing: The growing position should be sunny and open, without large trees that shade it or compete for water and nutrients. For growing carrots, it is a good idea to feed the soil generously with farmyard manure. Carrot seeds can be sown directly once the frost has left the ground and the soil is dry enough to work. Sow carrot seeds about 1 cm deep, with about 4–5 cm between the seeds in the row. Keep the distance between rows to about 30 cm when growing carrots – that makes it easy to get in to weed and harvest.
