Garden Peach – a velvety tomato with a peach-like skin
What sets Garden Peach apart
Garden Peach is an unusual salad tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) with yellow, faintly pink fruits and a velvety skin that recalls a peach. A good pick if you want to grow tomatoes at home and enjoy both the looks and the delicate flavour.
Background and name
Garden Peach is an old heirloom variety from Peru. The name comes from the tomato’s thin, soft skin, which has a slight fuzz like a peach.
Appearance and growth habit
A tall (indeterminate) variety that needs pinching out and tying in. The fruits are medium-sized, round and weigh around 100 grams. The colour varies between pale yellow and pink depending on ripeness.
Flavour and uses of Garden Peach
Mild, sweet and low in acidity. Lovely eaten fresh, straight from the plant or in light salads. A fun variety to serve to guests, both for looks and flavour.
Ripening time, resilience and storage
Ripens after about 70 days. Does well in a greenhouse but also in a sunny spot outdoors. Best picked when the fruit has taken on a slight pink tone. Should be eaten fresh, as it keeps only briefly.
Pollination tips
In a greenhouse, shake the plant at flowering for better fruit set.
How to grow Garden Peach
Sow in March–April. Plant out in a greenhouse or a warm spot outdoors. Tie in and pinch out regularly. Ripens after about 70 days.
The price is for 10 tomato seeds
Sow in seed compost and keep the compost lightly moist until the seeds germinate. Pot on into larger pots with nutrient-rich compost once the seedlings have their first true leaves. Harden off before planting out. Does best in a greenhouse or a warm spot outdoors. Provide support, pinch out regularly and water evenly for the best results.
