Micro Tom – The world’s smallest tomato plant with great charm
What is Micro Tom?
Micro Tom tomato seeds grow into an incredibly compact mini bush tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) that only reaches 10–20 cm in height. Perfect for the windowsill, the balcony or as a decorative plant. Despite its size it bears fully edible, tasty little tomatoes – ideal for anyone who wants to grow tomatoes at home even in the smallest space.
Background and name
Micro Tom was developed by crossing dwarf tomatoes with cherry varieties at the University of Florida. It is a favourite with children and adults alike – and a fascinating ornamental plant in its own right.
Appearance and growth habit
A mini bush (determinate) tomato that does not need side shoots removed. It grows as a dense little ball and is self-supporting.
Flavour and uses of Micro Tom
Small red tomatoes (about 1–2 cm) with a mild, sweet flavour. Lovely as a garnish, in a lunchbox or as a splash of colour in a salad.
Ripening time, resistance and storage
Ripens quickly – after only about 50 days. Despite its size the plant is surprisingly robust. Harvested tomatoes keep for about 4–5 days.
Pollination tips
Usually needs no help, but indoors a gentle shake of the plant can improve fruit set.
How to grow Micro Tom
Sow from February to April. Grow in a pot indoors or on a bright windowsill. No side-shoot removal required. Water evenly and give plenty of light.
Price is for 10 tomato seeds
Sow in seed compost and keep the compost lightly moist until the seeds germinate. Pot on into small pots of nutrient-rich compost once the seedlings have their true leaves. Does well in a bright spot indoors all year round. Water gently and avoid overfeeding.
