Delicious purple carrot with a bright orange core.
Purple Haze carrot seeds grow a variety that won the 2006 gold medal of the All American Selection, the American counterpart of Fleuroselect.
‘Purple Haze’ was awarded this coveted medal for its beautiful colour, uniform shape and sweet, good flavour.
If steamed, it keeps its purple colour even after cooking. Very decorative in salads too, and children in particular tend to like this colourful carrot.
High in vitamin A, and its purple colour also means a very high level of antioxidants.
The carrot originally comes from Afghanistan, and the wild carrot is in fact purple. ‘Purple Haze’ is named after one of the famous songs by rock legend Jimi Hendrix.
Also well suited to growing in boxes or pots on a balcony or patio; remember that the containers should be at least 30 cm deep.
Seeds for approx. 5 metres of sowing
Growing: choose a sunny, open spot without large trees that shade the plants or compete for water and nutrients. Dig in plenty of manure before sowing carrots. Carrot seeds can be sown directly once the ground has thawed and is dry enough to work. Sow the seeds about 1 cm deep, 4–5 cm apart in the row. Keep the rows about 30 cm apart, so that weeding and harvesting are easy.
