Firecracker – a colour-bursting chilli
What makes Firecracker special?
Firecracker is a chilli variety of the species Capsicum annuum, known for its spectacular colour changes and its medium-hot heat of about 30,000–40,000 Scoville. This chilli is as much an ornamental plant as a flavour booster in the kitchen, and its small, conical pods ripen in a beautiful palette from white to purple, orange and finally red.
Background and name
The name Firecracker reflects not only the plant’s colour-bursting looks but also its lively heat. Originally developed for its unique splendour of colour and compact habit, Firecracker is a favourite among chilli growers looking for a decorative and versatile variety.
Appearance and growth habit
Firecracker is a compact plant that reaches at most 60 cm, which makes it ideal for growing in pots, on the windowsill or on the balcony. The plant’s bushy form and generous harvest make it both easy to look after and decorative. The small, conical pods grow in clusters and gradually change colour during ripening, creating a fantastic visual effect.
Flavour and uses
With its medium-hot character, Firecracker has a clear but not overwhelming heat balanced by a mild, fruity undertone. The pods are thin and aromatic, which makes them versatile in cooking and preserving.
Ways to use Firecracker
- Pickles and preserves: The small pods are excellent for pickling, where their heat and aroma come into their own.
- Chilli powder and flakes: Dry the pods and grind into a powder for a flavourful spice in various dishes.
- Asian cooking: Perfect for woks, noodle dishes and sauces where a moderate heat is desired.
- Decoration and use: Let the plant adorn the windowsill or balcony while you harvest the beautiful pods for the kitchen.

Sow in moist seed compost and keep warm, at about 25–30°C for best germination The compost should be moist but not wet. A propagator helps to keep the air humid. Once the seedlings have grown a little and developed their second pair of leaves, you can lower the temperature to about 20°C and take them out of the propagator. They do well on a sunny windowsill, in a greenhouse and outdoors in summer. For best results, soak the seeds in Growhelper for 12–24 hours before sowing
