Flame – bicolour beefsteak tomato with a fruity flavour
What makes Flame special
Flame tomato seeds produce a decorative beefsteak tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) that combines beautiful colour shifts with a fruity, sweet flavour. A natural choice if you want to grow tomatoes at home with flavour and looks in focus.
Background and name
Sometimes also called “Hillbilly Flame” because of its roots in American heirloom collections. It offers fiery orange-red colours, both on the outside and in the flesh.
Appearance and growth habit
A tall-growing (indeterminate) variety that needs pinching out and tying in. The fruits are large, often over 300 grams, and round to flattened round in shape.
Flavour and uses
Sweet and mild with low acidity. Excellent in salads, carpaccio, grilled dishes or fresh tomato sauces. Also very good for tomato juice.
Ripening time, resilience and storage
Ripens after about 75 days. Tolerates heat well and gives an even harvest. Best eaten fresh – keeps for up to 3–4 days after harvest.
Pollination tips
Shake the plant gently during flowering if you grow in a greenhouse.

Sow in seed compost and keep the compost lightly moist until the seeds germinate. Pot on into larger pots of nutrient-rich compost once the seedlings have their first true leaves. Harden off before planting out. Does best in a greenhouse or a warm spot outdoors. Give support, pinch out regularly and water evenly for the best results.
