Glacier – an extra-early tomato for cooler climates
What sets Glacier apart
Glacier is an extremely early bush tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) bred for a cool climate. A favourite of the impatient tomato grower, especially if you want to grow tomatoes from seed outdoors in a Nordic climate.
Background and name
The variety was bred in Sweden and is particularly well adapted to colder growing zones. The name “Glacier” refers to its ability to crop even at low temperatures.
Appearance and growth habit
A bush tomato (determinate) that does not need pinching out. The plant reaches about 60–80 cm in height and bears plenty of medium-sized, round red tomatoes.
Flavour and uses of Glacier
Mild and lightly sweet. Excellent in sandwiches, salads and tomato sauce. Better flavour than many other early varieties.
Ripening time, resilience and storage
Ripens after only about 55–60 days. Very tolerant of cold and changeable weather. Short shelf life – best eaten fresh.
Pollination tips
Choose a sheltered but airy spot. The wind is usually enough, but you can help with a soft brush.
How to grow Glacier
Sow in February–March. Plant out early, outdoors or in a pot. Do not pinch out. Provide support if needed and keep watering even.
The price is for 10 tomato seeds
Sow in seed compost and keep evenly moist. Pot on into a larger pot or plant out in the ground. Also does well in cooler temperatures.
