Gold Nugget – a yellow cherry tomato with a mild, sweet flavour
What sets Gold Nugget apart
Gold Nugget is a sweet, low-acid cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) with attractive golden-yellow fruits. A good variety if you want to grow tomatoes at home that taste good and brighten up the garden.
Background and name
The variety was developed at Oregon State University as part of a project to produce tasty, coloured tomatoes for colder climates. It has since become very popular with home growers.
Appearance and growth habit
A bush tomato (determinate) that reaches about 60–70 cm in height. Does not need pinching out. Produces plenty of small, round tomatoes of 15–20 grams.
Flavour and uses of Gold Nugget
Sweet and mild with low acidity – good for children, salads and fresh snacks. Also looks lovely in colourful tomato mixes.
Ripening time, resilience and storage
Early ripening, at about 60 days. A robust variety with good resistance. The fruits keep well at room temperature for 4–5 days after picking.
Pollination tips
Shake the flower trusses gently in a greenhouse to increase the harvest.
How to grow Gold Nugget
Start the seeds in March–April. Plant out once the risk of frost has passed. Needs no pinching out, but appreciates support. Ripens about 60 days after planting out.
The price is for 10 tomato seeds
Sow in seed compost and keep the compost lightly moist until the seeds germinate. Pot on into larger pots with nutrient-rich compost once the seedlings have their first true leaves. Harden off before planting out. Does best in a greenhouse or a warm spot outdoors. Provide support if needed, water evenly and enjoy the harvest.
