Green Zebra – a green-striped tomato with a tangy, fresh character
What sets Green Zebra apart
Green Zebra is an unusual salad tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) that stands out with its green-yellow stripes and fresh, tangy flavour. A fun choice if you want to grow tomatoes from seed and stand out with both colour and taste.
Background and name
The variety was bred by Tom Wagner in the USA in the 1980s and has since become a modern heirloom classic. It is often used in fine restaurants and on platters of coloured tomatoes.
Appearance and growth habit
A tall (indeterminate) variety that needs pinching out and tying in. The tomatoes are round to slightly flattened, about 100–150 grams, with green stripes on a yellow background.
Flavour and uses of Green Zebra
A spicy, freshly tart flavour – good in salads, ceviche, pickling and as a contrast on mixed tomato platters. A genuinely fresh taste.
Ripening time, resilience and storage
Mid-season, at about 70 days. Tolerates damp and heat well. The tomatoes keep for a few days after picking, but taste best straight from the plant.
Pollination tips
Shake the plant during flowering in a greenhouse for better fruit set.
How to grow Green Zebra
Sow in March–April. Plant out after the last frost in a greenhouse or a warm spot outdoors. Tie in and pinch out regularly. Ripens after about 70 days.
The price is for 10 tomato seeds
Sow in seed compost and keep the compost lightly moist until the seeds germinate. Pot on into larger pots with nutrient-rich compost once the seedlings have their first true leaves. Harden off before planting out. Does best in a greenhouse or a warm spot outdoors. Provide support, pinch out regularly and water evenly for the best results.
