Purple Beauty
What is Purple Beauty?
Purple Beauty is a wonderfully decorative pepper with a deep purple colour and a mild, sweet flavour. A real favourite among growers who want a splash of colour in both the garden and the kitchen.
Background and name
The variety has been bred for its unusual colour – from green to intense purple, often with a shift towards red at full ripeness. It has become popular with both hobby and professional growers for its ornamental value.
Appearance and growth habit
The plant grows 50–70 cm tall, with medium-sized blocky peppers about 8–10 cm long. The fruits start out green and develop a dark purple tone over time.
Flavour and uses of Purple Beauty
Mild, sweet and slightly fruity. The colour keeps well raw but fades somewhat when cooked – so use it cold for the best colour effect.
Serving ideas for Purple Beauty
Shred into a salad, serve raw on a cheeseboard, or stuff and bake. It is also suitable for pickling in vinegar.
How to grow Purple Beauty
Purple Beauty is a Capsicum annuum and is sown between February and April. It does well in both a greenhouse and a pot. For the best colour, give it plenty of sun.
Price is for 6 sweet pepper seeds
Sow in moist seed compost and keep warm, at about 25–30°C for best germination. The compost should be moist but not wet. A propagator helps to keep the air humid. Once the seedlings have grown a little and developed their second pair of leaves, you can lower the temperature to about 20°C and move them out of the propagator. They do well on a sunny windowsill, or in a greenhouse and outdoors in summer. For best results, soak the seeds in Growhelper for 12–24 hours before sowing.
